The Judge Rotenberg School for Special Needs Children is on trial in Massachusetts. Yesterday jurors watched school administrators strap down and electro-shock a screaming 8 year old boy 31 times, because he refused to take off his coat.
To avoid jury duty, hairdresser Susan Cole devised a plan “to appear to be mentally unstable” and it worked. Until she then bragged about it on a local Denver radio station talk show. The judge was listening. She’s been arrested.
SAMHSA and the MacArthur Foundation are committing $1 million to create a system where mentally challenged youth (60% of which show signs of substance abuse disorders) are given community based services instead of being placed in the juvenile justice system.

A government survey shows 1 in 5 Americans suffered from mental illness over a 12 month period. Twenty percent of adults over 18 reported experiencing mental illness. It was nearly 30% for the 18-25 year old group.
