DUID is Driving Under the Influence of Drugs (drugged driving)

With the recent legalization of marijuana in Colorado came revision of laws intended to regulate irresponsible use of substances (like alcohol and marijuana). The concept of “drunk driving” was revised to include “drugged driving”.

There is plenty of controversy over the implementation, but the spirit of the law is to regulate the use of mind/body impairing substances while operating a vehicle on the public byways.

News today out of Colorado’s 9News points a a finger at pot in a drugged-driving report. Two Colorado State Troopers were reportedly stopped in the left lane of a highway exit ramp, investigating something, when 23 year old Keith Kilbey, plowed into their uninhabited cars. According to the report, Keith was under the influence of marijuana and didn’t see the flashing lights and patrol cars until it was too late. He’s been charged with driving under the influence of drugs (DUID or “drugged driving”).
