The Sturgis Rally Daily reported that Robbie Knievel, a daredevil stuntman himself and son of former daredevil motorcylist and stunt man Evel Knievel, was arrested yesterday for his first DUI. Robby Knievel had been at the Sturgis rally during the day and allegedly was involved in a multi-vehicle collision involving parked vehicles.
TMZ reports the accident did not involve motorcyclists but motor homes, and was described as a leaving-the-scene event. They say Knievel blew a .228 blood alcohol concentration (BAC) which is 3 times the South Dakota legal limit for DUI, when he was found later in his parked but running motor home.
This is fairly common for DUI incidents. The driver assumes he’s more capable than he is under the alcohol impairment, and attempts a tight squeeze (between parked motor homes in this case), only to cause unexpected damage. Afraid of being discovered impaired, he races off to avoid scrutiny, and parks somewhere quiet to “sleep it off”.
It is also fairly common for such DUI drivers to cause a more serious accident while attempting to flee, and to forget to turn off the ignition when they park. They don’t realize that sitting drunk in a vehicle with the key in the ignition is legally a DUI situation, or they assume they will not be discovered until they have “sobered up”.
A South Dakota Highway Patrol officer found Mr. Knievel in Boulder Canyon, where he was processed, jailed, and fined. The current Sturgis Rally and Festival is the 73rd Annual. The Buffalo Chip campground where the accident was reported is a primary venue for festivities.
