Want to Forget Your Binge Drinking?

When you party so hard and drink so much you black out, you don’t have any memory of the night. Oh sure you know you were drinking. You know you were drunk, but memory? Nope… once you reach a certain point, the rest is pretty much a blank. So why would scientists think erasing the memory of alcohol will help people avoid relapsing into drinking?

We’ve reported in the past about Propranolol being tested to wipe out memories of the high associated with cocaine. Now scientists at UC San Francisco’s  Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center have been conducting studies to see if they can effectively erase the memory of the pleasure of drinking alcohol. They hope the results will help people who have been sober avoid relapsing. It is unknown how long the drug’s effects last. Current research shows it lasts 14 days in rats.

The researchers found that a drug called rapamycin (Approved by the FDA to prevent organ transplant rejections.) reaches the brain at a level deeper than conscious memory, erasing the memories of pleasurable sensations.  Groovy. But… university reporters noted that a 2009 Time article said the drug also reduces the patient’s immune system’s ability to fight off infections… and it has been shown to be linked to high levels of triglycerides in the blood. Heart disease can follow those side effects.

The Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center was founded by members of the Ernest and Julio Gallo family, the world’s largest family-owned winery.
