Bollywood actress Jiah Khan was found dead of an apparent suicide at her home in Mumbia, India. Despite early rumors to the contrary, there has been no evidence that drugs nor alcohol were involved.

The Times of India notes that a “source” close to Jiah said she had been suffering from depression, but remained active in her career. Jiah’s normally active twitter account was paused from mid April until mid May, when Jiah returned and posted an apology for her absence, saying “sometimes u need a sabbatical to recollect ur thoughts”.

With so many untimely celebrity deaths, excesses including alcohol and drugs contribute to the tragic events. Depression is often treated with powerful mood-altering drugs, which can lead to problems when mixed with alcohol. But in this case, there is no evidence of drug use or alcohol use at all.

In the weeks prior to her sabbatical, Jiah posted two references to a break up and the emotional aftermath following a break up. First, a brief poem about gaining strength from a changed relationship:

“I broke his walls. Then I broke him. With the rubble I built a fortress of my own.”

and then a reference to moving on:

“It amazes me how many people I thought I couldn’t live without until I tried”

So sorry to lose Jiah Kahn. There were no drugs, no alcohol, but maybe a broken heart.
