Designer drugs take over Europe – authorities count over 57 new designer drugs on streets of Europe in 2012

The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) has released its Annual report showing 57 new “legal” drugs on the streets so far in 2012; with no signs of any slow down.

Designer drugs are new chemical molecules (“novel substances”) which are technically NOT any of the molecules listed as controlled substances, and are therefore legal to manufacture, posses, and sell. Most, however, are practically very similar to synthetic marijuana, methamphetamine and derivatives,  bath salts, and other known-to-be-dangerous, illegal substances.

At first look, the bulk of the drugs appear to be stimulants. Part of the report notes that marijuana and cocaine are down on measures of market share, compared to stimulants and synthetic marijuana varieties (which are more like stimulants than they are like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana).
