“Octo-mom” Nadya Suleman in Rehab

Nadya Suleman also known as Octomom has headed to rehab for Xanax addiction treatment. The babies are fine, according to the nannies (PR Photos).

Some celebrities are gifted and talented, bound for a life of celebrity from the start. Others start out as “regular people” who seem to have all the necessary ingredients, but need a break to get started.  And then there’s Nadya Suleman.

Suleman is “Octomom”, a lady who first hit the spotlight after giving birth to 8 babies (octuplets), when she already had 6 children (one pair of twins, and 4 “singletons”). Her octuplets became the second set of eight to be born in the US, and are now the longest-surviving set of eight in history.

Suleman was a single mother of 6 kids and on public assistance when she pursued the additional in vitro fertilization procedures that led to the octuplets.  Unemployed and responsible for the care of 6 young children, Suleman appeared to be addicted to having babies on her own volition (via in-vitro fertilization), and she found the doctor to help her.

Now celebrity site TMZ reports Suleman is now in rehab for Xanax, chemically known as Alprazolam, a prescription benzodiazepine often prescribed for anxiety:

A benzodiazepine, also known as a “benzo” or “BZD”, is a drug most commonly used to treat anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, seizures and muscle spasms. Benzos also treat substance withdrawals and are used to stabilize patients for medical procedures.

The single implantation of 12 embryos at once, which led to the rare octuplets, also led her doctor’s license suspension. The drama of the birth, and the controversy over the ethics of the implantation efforts created the celebrity “Octomom”. However, most if not all of the celebrity news around Suleman has been the crazy kind:

  • multiple appearances on Oprah and other shows, taking about the craziness of her life situation (including finances and challenges)
  • claims of having never accepted public assistance, followed by admissions she was on welfare and disability at various times.
  • moving out of her rental into an owned home in a nice neighborhood
  • visits from social workers to investigate a claim of “general neglect” (none was noted)
  • losing that home to foreclosure and moving into a rental in not as nice neighborhood
  • declaring personal bankruptcy and going back on welfare
  • claims of “never” considering an adult film career, folllowed by reports of working as an adult entertainer in strip clubs
  • posing semi-nude for European magazine “Closer”
  • Acting in adult diaper fetish film with Rick Dees
  • Acting in adult film “Octomom Uncovered” produced by Wicked Entertainment

So the news surrounding Suleman is about a Xanax addiction. But the reports are hopeful. Octomom is said to be in treatment to get off of her doctor prescribed Xanax and to learn how to better manage the stresses and anxiety of her life. That is a very positive statement.

It sounds like she’s in good hands headed into treatment. Maybe Octomom has done a better job selecting a treatment center for her Xanax addiction than she did picking doctors in the past.
