DSM-5 and Addiction : Open for Public Comment

DSM-4 was published in 1994. The DSM-5 is scheduled for publication in 2013.

The last day of 2012 is the final due date for the final draft of the next edition of the DSM:  the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The DSM-5 is scheduled to be published in May of 2013.

The draft of the diagnostic category “Substance Use and Addictive Disorders”, has been published for review and public comment from now (May 2) through June 15.

There are many changes, most of which have been planned for years.  Gambling Addiction is being recognized, while Internet Addiction and Caffeine Addiction are acknowledged as areas needing further consideration for future inclusion. Disorders related to fetal alcohol exposure are also slated for more attention in the future.
