A new movie starts filming April 16, directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut). It’s called Don Jon’s Addiction, and it chronicles the life of a sex addict who learns a few things about life along the way to recovery. Obviously it shares a name space with JohnsAddiction.com, but coincidentally it is also about a main character suffering a sex addiction.

The portrayal of compulsive sex-seeking as an addiction is controversial. Despite the common interpretation of “sex addiction” as a strong desire for more and more sex, with often inappropriate emphasis on getting it, science questions the validity of the sex addiction label.

One 2010 research study from the Center for Marital and Sexual Health in Ohio studied men who visited a counselor for “sex addiction”. More than half were actually in counseling because they were “caught” not conforming with expectations of a spouse or standard sexual norms. Less than 25% exhibited a spiraling deterioration typical of an addiction, and only a quarter of those were thought to qualify for a “sex addiction” diagnosis.

Some estimate that as many as 9 million Americans suffer “Internet porn addiction”, and Hollywood has shown an interest in portraying sex addicts lately. Don Jon’s Addiction stars director Joseph Gordon-Levitt (known as JGL), who  co-stars with Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore. JGL also wrote the story.

Hollywood gossip sites are reporting that JGL needs to play a ripped sex addict — one with abdominals to-die-for.  Some say Gordon-Levitt has already been working out furiously, attempting to develop a set of abs reminiscent of Jersey Shore’s The Situation. Schedule changes caused JGL to cancel a small part in Quinton Tarantino’s latest film, which has increased awareness of Don Jon’s Addiction, since it would have to be good to warrant cancelling on Tarantino.

Gordon-Levitt also wrote the project and will star as a modern day Don Juan who sets out on a quest to become less of a “selfish dick.” Moore would play an unlikely mentor to Gordon-Levitt’s character, and Scarlett Johansson is also on board to co-star.

In notes of the aftermath of February’s Berlinale’s European Film Market (in Germany), Variety reported that Voltage Pictures would produce Don Jon’s Addiction, and that JGL’s character suffered an Internet porn addiction:

Likewise going out via Ascot Elite will be Voltage Pictures’ "Don Jon’s Addiction," Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature debut about a young man struggling with an Internet porn addiction, in which he stars with Scarlett Johansson.

The German purchase is said to ensure a theater and DVD release in Europe, which suggests a US/ North American release is very likely.
